Mazda's Morgan Park Mission

After three long years on the road, Jake Camilleri in the Grand Prix Mazda 3 MPS will be back racing at a national level on home soil in Queensland this weekend, with the third round of the Australia Manufacturers Championship at Morgan Park Raceway.

The Grand Prix Mazda crew has been working overtime in the three weeks since the most recent championship round at Eastern Creek, where the car suffered extensive damage in a high speed incident at the infamous turn one.

Although the team performed a miracle to repair the car in time for the final race, and Camilleri drove brilliantly to come home in fifth outright, many hours have been put in to ensure the car is in perfect condition for this round.

The outright class cars know they are in for a hard time too, after Camilleri put the Mazda 3 MPS onto the outright podium at the opening round of the championship at Wakefield Park, a circuit not dissimilar to the tight and technical Morgan Park layout.

"We are going into the weekend with the same set up that worked well at Wakefield Park," said Camilleri.

"The track should really suit the car much better than Eastern Creek where it was a struggle on the long pit straight to keep ahead of the V8s, the Mazda 3 MPS really responds well on the tighter circuits.

"The team's excited and I'm excited to be back racing at home, and we are expecting a lot of friends and family to come up to Warwick for the weekend."

Camilleri has logged many laps around Morgan Park Raceway over the years, including in sports cars and Saloon Cars, a class in which he held the lap record aboard the Castrol EA Falcon.

Team manager Joseph Camilleri is also looking forward to the Mazda's debut on the 2.1km long circuit.

"After the weekend we had at Eastern Creek, we are really looking for a bit of redemption at our home round," said Joseph.

"The car should be quick, there's a good mix of fast and tight corners, and I think a bit of previous knowledge of the track will put Jake in good stead."

The Grand Prix Mazda 3 MPS will take to the track for qualifying at 11:35am on Saturday before three races over the weekend, culminating in the 18 lap race on Sunday afternoon.

Grand Prix Mazda Racing would like to thank Castrol, Esanda, Allianz and All Star Tuning Systems for their continued support.
