Jake Camilleri proved the outright speed of the Grand Prix Mazda 3 MPS once again with second overall at the third round of the Australian Manufacturers Championship this weekend at Morgan Park Raceway in Queensland.
Camilleri not only had to battle stiff competition on the race track, but also the ill effects of severe flu, which didn’t slow him from taking a pair of third places and a second place from the weekend’s three heats.
After finishing behind fellow Queenslander Lee Castle and Rod Salmon in the first race, Camilleri took advantage of a Salmon mistake to take second place in race number two.
Although the handicap system utilised in the final 18-lap race failed to play into the hands of the Grand Prix Mazda squad, the tight and twisty Morgan Park layout suited the nimble Mazda 3 MPS, with Camilleri once again finishing behind Castle and Salmon.
For Camilleri, the success at his home round in Queensland is a massive boost in the team’s championship bid.
“We are really happy with the weekend, it all went according to plan,” said Camilleri.
“The key to going fast around Morgan Park in the front-wheel drive Mazda is to be as smooth and consistent as possible, be precise and hit every single apex.
“The car performed very well, and we showed that it really is an outright competitor in the championship.
“It’s pretty good to get a one-two for Queensland with Lee at our home round.”
Team manager Joseph Camilleri was once again proud of the team effort involved in putting together a top outright result.
“I am absolutely rapt to pull off second outright, Jake drove fantastically well considering how sick he was over the weekend,” said Joseph.
“All of our family and friends made the trip out to Warwick, and they are all really impressed with the weekend.
“It really helps us out big time with the championship points, and we can’t wait for Oran Park.”
The Grand Prix Mazda 3 MPS had its first ever win at the western Sydney circuit last year, and the team is hoping for more success in three weeks time at the final championship round at the facility.
Grand Prix Mazda Racing would like to thank Castrol, Esanda, Allianz and All Star Tuning Systems for their continued support.
