National Sports Sedans Set for 2010

The Kerrick Sports Sedan National Series has announced its plans for 2010, including a new class within the series and a five-round calendar with the Shannons Nationals.

Running as part of the Kerrick Series, the Production Sports Sedans (PSS) class will make national Sports Sedan competition more accessible to competitors, while all five rounds will be run with the Shannons Nationals and televised on SBS’ Speedweek.

The outright Kerrick Sports Sedan Series will remain as is, for space-framed Sports Sedans with a maximum engine capacity of six-litres, including turbo engined-cars.

Providing a race within the race, normally-aspirated Sports Sedans with an engine capacity up to 3.5-litres and the slightly lower-tech Production Sports Sedans will start each race approximately 10 seconds behind the main group.

“Motor Racing is all about the spectacle and Australian fans love spectacular looking, fast, noisy, flame belching cars,” series manager Phil Crompton said.

“Sports Sedans offer this in abundance with a wide variety of body shapes and high-powered engines.

“Production Sports Sedans will offer a similar spectacle, albeit at slower lap times, giving fans two separate races within each race.

“It will be a fun and entertaining class to watch, most of the cars will be overpowered and under-tyred with little aerodynamic assistance.

“As fields grow to beyond grid capacity, the two categories could be split and hold separate races.”

Rules for Production Sports Sedans are currently being developed, but will essentially feature ‘hotted up’ touring cars running on slick tyres.

Cars will run as-per their manufacturer’s body specification with a limited aerodynamic package.

The engine, gearbox and differential will remain in original positions, while modifications can be made to the engine, drivetrain, suspension and brakes.

“Production Sports Sedans is being introduced to provide a starting point for Sports Sedan competitors,” Crompton said.

“Today’s Sports Sedans and Trans-Am cars are very high-tech, purpose-built race cars with a lot of individually-manufactured components.

“Not all prospective teams have the equipment or capacity to build and maintain a front-running Sports Sedan, so Production Sports Sedans will act as a stepping stone.”

Kerrick Industrial Equipment will continue their support of the series, with the 2010 Kerrick Sports Sedan National Series returning to run its full, five-round schedule with the Shannons Nationals across four states.

This year’s calendar has seen the series contest three rounds with the Shannons Nationals, before appearing at upcoming state-level meetings in New South Wales and Victoria.

Wakefield Park will host the 2010 season opener next March, before the series visits Mallala Motor Sport Park, Morgan Park Raceway and Eastern Creek Raceway, while Sandown Raceway will host the season finale.

Mallala’s round will again be the centrepiece of the calendar with the prestigious Clem Smith Cup, a longer race with prize money and incentives to be increased next year.

The Shannons Nationals’ first visit to Morgan Park in August featured three non-championship races from the Queensland Sports Sedan Series.

Next year, the full National Series will make its debut at the Warwick circuit in what’s set to be an amazing spectacle.

Darren Hossack (Audi) leads the 2009 Kerrick Sports Sedan Series over Des Wall (Corvette) and Tony Ricciardello (Alfa) leading into the final two rounds at Oran Park on 31 October - 1 November and Phillip Island on 21-22 November.

Round Nine of the 2009 Shannons Nationals will be held at Melbourne’s Sandown Raceway on 28-29 November.

The Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship, Boylan Traffic Solutions Australian Manufacturers Championship, Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge, Commodore Cup National Series, Kumho Tyres Australian Saloon Car Series and Shannons V8 Touring Car Series will feature across two days.
